Win2k Server vs Pro

Does Win2k Server run everything that Pro does? I know that Advanced Server cann't play Quake3 or have zonealarm. Can I run does in Server? Isn't Server just a stablier version of Pro?

Server allows more CPUs (4 way SMP, Pro is only 2), and has a few apps in it that Pro doesn't.

My friend is running Win2k Server as his only OS, he's not a big FPS gamer, but he runs Firewalls and EverQuest and Starcraft....so I imagine you'd be ok.

You should be able to run any program that runs on win2k pro, on server. It may not perform as well due to more services running, but it should run.

unless you have Norton Systemworks 2001...it tells you that you have to have only PRO to install...guess they want you to have the corporate versions for any of that 🙂

Dang... but the only app I like from that suite is the anti virus... does that install?

I don't have Win 2000 Server yet (Anyone want to sell me a legit copy?), but I have WinNT 4.0 Server (Actually BackOffice).

Some software doesn't run on the server versions of Windows (NT 4.0 or 2000). As much as I hate to admit it, this is one time that Microsoft isn't at fault. At least for all of the software that I have tried, the failure to run on the server flavor of Windows is because the application has been specifically wired not to run. This is usually because the company wants to sell their server version, i.e., multiple user version, of the same application.

I have heard of, but never tried, ways to hack the registry of Windows NT Server to identify itself as Windows NT (I've not checked for Win 2K.) Let your own conscious guide you here.

It's true, there seems to be no way to install norton systemworks 2001 (or 2000) on win2k server. However, you can install just the antivirus program from the 2001 CD. I did this and it seems to work just fine. I believe there is an executable in the antivirus subdirectory on the disk. Note that this is not recommended by norton...
