Win2k server, NTDETECT Failed, I/O error

I have an NEC 366 machine that I would like to install Win2k server on. I have a primary NTFS partition with about 3 gigs.
I insert the CD and boot, but it hangs at "Detecting hardware settings...." and gives me an NTDETECT Failure and I/O error.
I thought it might have been my partitioning, but whatever file system I use FAT16/NTFS, it gives me this error.
Win2k install just fine, but server always gives me this problem. Anyone know what I could be doing wrong? Thanx.
