Win2k Server - Need to activate Net Logon...

Okay, I'm very new to Servers in general.

I recently built a Win2k Server and I am trying to set up a multimedia management software title called Cumulus.

In the Cumulus manual, it says "Net Logon must be started on the computer running the Cumulus Server under Windows."

So, I go to Services -> Net Logon and Start it. I get an error. It says, " The Windows NT computer is configured as a member of a workgroup, not as a member of a domain. The NetLogon service does not need to run in this configuration."

So I go and borrow a book called "Mastering Windows 2000 Server." It's a big book and doesn't really tell me what I need to do.

Now, the question! Can someone tell me what I need to do, or point me to a web resource, or step me through the process? Do I need to have Activate Directory going?

Thanks for any help!

Under Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services, there is a Service called Net Logon. Is it started?

It will not start. It says I need to change the configuration from Workgroup to Domain... I don't know how to do this or what is involved.

Does Cumulus require that their software be installed on a machine that is a member of a domain?

Netlogon should not run on workgroup computers.

Contact Cumulus tech support; their instructions are not appropriate to your environment.

Cumulus came with a plug-in that allows us to open our images up to the web (publications office). I would like to have our server double as a web server for this application.

Can I run a web server while configured as a Workgroup?

yes.

Are you sure that your computer is configured to be in a workgroup, and not a nonexistent domain? Right click on my computer, go to properties, click the network identification tab, click change, then make sure you have something entered in the member of Workgroup: field, rather than the domain field.

stash-

how could it be a member of a non-existant domain? if the domain didnt exist than it would not allow him to join in the first place, and if the domain is no longer present netlogon would still be running.

yeah true...I'm not really thinking today.

I meant to post that you can run a web server in a workgroup and leave it at that.

Okay, good. I'll contact Canto and ask if I can run it while in a workgroup.

I'm assuming they need NetLogon because Cumulus clients log on to the server, but I don't really know.

I received this email today:

"Yes, Net Logon needs to be active on the Cumulus Server machine. Otherwise, Cumulus won't be able to do any authentication.

Regards,
Canto Support"

So, back to the original question. How do I re-configure my machine so I can make Net Logon Active?

Thanks,
Matt

You'll need to set up a domain controller on your network, set up a domain and set up your server as a member of that domain.

Okay, couple of questions:
What if I don't have a domain name to use?
What's a domain controller? Do I need a sperate computer for this, or can it be configured on the same computer, or would it already be setup with in the office building?

Please forgive my ignorance. I've worked with Macs and PCs for years, but I've never had to work with configuring servers. All the servers in my office were setup before I started working here.

In your case setting up a domain is a bit of a can of worms to open so I would do this on a test server first. the way to go about doing it would be to run the Active Directory Wizard, it will setup Active directory and once you have that running you can join the client computers to the domain. Just a hunch but if their software requires the server be a domain member for authentication it may require the clients be domain members also so you will have to "join" them to the domain once you have created it. You should be able to run Active Directory (Domain) on the same server as your software however you may want to bounce another e-mail by their support to make sure that is the case.

Good Luck

FYI according to their website they have client software for Macs and Windows so my guess would be that the client computers will not need to be domain members.
