I have been evaluating the Asus CUSI-FX motherboard and have been really impressed till i found that the PXE Lan booting ability of the onboard Sis Ethernet appears partially broken.
I have tried all the bioses up to 1009ifx.003 and can only get the Win2K AD Server RIS - Windows 2000 Professional install on the remote host to get past the "Press F6 to install additional adapters..." and then the install stops, saying:-

Windows 2000 Setup

The network boot card in your computer has an older version of Rom and cannot be used to remotely install Windows 2000.
Contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for information about upgrading the rom.
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.

The PXE remote install is working up to this point fine, so cant understand how Asus could overlook this, or am i hitting a Win2K AD RIS problem?
I have contacted Asus support by email and have had no reply, so am hoping that maybe someone with RIS OS deployment experience may be able to help me solve this problem.

If this is a bios problem which Asus dont seem to care about, would i be better off ditching this motherboard? Any recomendations be much appreciated for a worthy replacement :)

If someone can offer me some help/advice it would be gratefully received.

Thanx,

rockhard =)

That's strange. That board should support PXE 2.0. What I would do is run the RBFG.EXE program that is located on the volume that the REMONTEINSTALL folder resides on. The program is under REMOTEINSTALL\ADMIN\I386.

Also, did you install RIS on another volume? A volume that does not contain the installation of AS.

If this still does not work, you will need to edit the GPO of the Active Directory domain you setup. Open the Active Directory Users and Computers MMC, right-click on the domain name and select PROPERTIES. From there you should see the Group Policy tab. If not, then you need to make sure in the ADVANCED menu option that all of the options are check-marked. Goto the Computer heading and look for the USER RIGHTS section. There, add the username you are using to install the RIS image is added to the "LOGON AS A BATCH SERVICE" right.

Also, do you have Active Directory installed? Is the RIS server listed in the Authorized list of DHCP servers in the DHCP MMC?

Shadow07 - Thanx for your reply.

In answer to your questions:-

<< What I would do is run the RBFG.EXE program that is located on the volume that the REMONTEINSTALL folder resides on. >>

I have done this to see if i could double check my NIC's compatibilty by using the Floppy based client, but my NIC is not listed there so i cannot check fraid :(

<< Also, did you install RIS on another volume? A volume that does not contain the installation of AS >>

Yes - my "RemoteInst" folder is on a seperate Logical Drive, so that should not be a problem.

My policy was ok. But from here on it got a bit wooly as im not that well versed with RIS remote OS install yet, so i just followed the Step by Step instructions from MS's site. Did the "Delegate" - "Everyone" under the AD Users and Profiles MMC and ensured that all sub-options had their boxes checked.

<< Also, do you have Active Directory installed? Is the RIS server listed in the Authorized list of DHCP servers in the DHCP MMC? >>

Active Directory is installed just fine and the RIS server is listed in the DHCP server list as authorised.

I must have been getting somewhere because i was able to logon successfully and the client was able to initiate the "Reboot" from the RIS server and dragged and ran the OS installer program off of the server and greeted me with the blue Win2K install screen with the "Press F6 for additional devices.." prompt. What puzzled me was how the install came to an abrupt stop with the prompt from my previous post?

It would appear that it should work, but something with Win2k is stopping it. Maybe its because the OS install does not have the drivers for this NIC built into the OS?

Im going to scrub my Win2 Server install this week and install SBS 2000 which i got in the mail today and see how i get on from a fresh server install. Be just my luck to have fuxored the OS in some way as ive been fumbling around ;)

I have a Tyan i810 mobo in my net rig thats getting swapped out next week, so i'll give that a try as it has Intel Pro+ Management NIC onboard which i know is compatible. Should then be able to find out if its me or the Sis Ethernet at fault :)

Im currently trying to finish my studying for Net+ so cant spend much time trouble shooting this at the moment as i would like. Heh, i wish i hadnt bought them damn MCSE books in advance as i cant help myself having a peek and getting ideas for stuff to play with :D - guess im going to have to hide them till i get my Net+ passed :(

Thanx for your help - much appreciated. When i have another go next week i'll post up how i got on, and if i have any troubles hope you dont mind me pestering you for some more help.

regards,

rockhard =)

Hello again :)

I managed to try the intel mobo and it worked flawlessly and i had no probs whatsoever installing via RIS :)
The Intel 10/100 Pro+ shows it having Boot Agent 3.0.04 whereas the SIS 900 has Intel Undi PXE 2.0 (build 082)?
Looks like im going to have to ditch asus as their tch support has been of no help whatsoever :(
At least now i can centralize my home lan at last :)

I tried Win2000 Small Business Server as well last week and am really impressed with it.
I really liked the MMC that is all centralised in one place :)
Just wondering if MS offers a MMC update to allow the use of the SBS MMC in normal server? Just a thought.
