I'm trying to play Settlers II, which is old old game. It seems to work just fine through command prompt, but I can't get it to recognize my SB Live! 5.1, all I get are (for midi sounds) "XMIDI sound hardware not found - check driver type and configuration" and (for digital music) "Digital sound hardware not found - blah blah.." errors.

I noticed that when installing drivers from the CD it only installs Windows drivers. There are DOS drivers on the CD, but how do I install them? Is it even possible? How the *** do I get it to recognize my sound card!?

Win2k and XP do not have DOS.

What they do have is a DOS Emulator. Quite a few DOS applications tend to have trouble with it, espcially games, your lucky your game runs in it....

The emulator unfortunely does not have support for sound drivers, the SB Live DOS drivers will not function under it.

There is however a way around this, you can use a program called VDMSound which will provide a interface in DOS to your windows sound card driver. This will allow DOS programs to have sound. It however is a bit buggy, it does not work will all programs. If it does not work, you will not be getting sound from your game :(

Good luck!

Thanks for your help. I knew 2k don't have actual DOS, but what I didn't know is how limited the emulator actually is, that sucks :( Well, I guess I have to build myself some crappy gaming comp of the junk parts and put DOS on it :p
