hi all-

i have a strange problem since i switched form win98se to win2k. the little symbol (the network icon) in the lower right corner will pop up and say that my network cable is disconnected. i re-checked all the cabling and everything is kosher. the computer is connected to a 10/100 switch and then to nic #2 in my linux box which is running ip maquerading. i have 3 other computers connected to this linux box and while none run win2k, none of them ever have a hiccup. is this just me? also for background i am running a 3com 905b pci nic in the win2k box and the linux box. i hope someone has a fix for this because i'm really getting frustrated. its especially bothersome while berning from the network drive (love samba). anyways, thanks in advance.

Click on the disabled network icon in the sys tray. This should bring up the Network and Dial-up Connections. Right-click on the grayed icon (properly Local Area Connection) and select disable.

Maybe it's the PCI slot the NIC is in. NICs like PCI slots 2 and 3, and elsewhere can work inconsistently or not at all.

I had a similiar problem. For me, it was a bad cable. Changed cables, works fine now. I'm unsure why WIN2K is more sensitive to detect disconnects than WIN98.
