Win2K & Promise Ultra 66 controller

Hi folks...

I'm dualbooting Win2K Professional & W98.

I have installed a Promise Ultra 66 controller to replace my motherboard's secondary IDE port, which has stopped functioning... so my primary hard drive and CD burner are on the motherboard's primary ide port and my secondary hard drive and CD-ROM are on the promise card's port (master & slave).

Everything works absolutely fine in W98 where I was able to install the latest drivers with no problem.

However, in W2K, the CDROM is glitchy... it functions properly until I try to remove a CD from the drive, at which point it brings down the entire system... yes, you heard it right... W2K freezes and I have to do a hard reboot... yikes.

My initial assumption is that I need to update the driver... no problem... on to the website, grab the driver, follow the instructions carefully when updating the driver, and just when I think it's all about done, I get an error message saying that "this driver is not supported by Windows 2000"... what? But the website says this is a W2K driver! Aack!

Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers,
Wade

If I remember correctly, Promise does not recommend putting a CD on their controllers. Put both hard drives on the controller.

Yeah, I thought of that... however, this will only work once I've replaced my motherboard and hence get both onboard ide ports back... right now only the primary works, and I don't want my cd-reader and cd-writer on the same port for obvious reasons.

Has anyone else with a promise card & Win2000 tried updating to the most recent driver package? Anyone successful?

Cheers,
Wade

I just told the driver to use the NT4 driver, it works like a charm. I am not sure why the Windows2000 driver doesn't work.

Ok, I tried installing the NT4.0 drivers... they went in without a hitch... then tried to duplicate the problem I had before and wasn't able to... so that is a good thing so far... thanx for your help.

FWIW, I downloaded the latest drivers (the ultra 100 drivers 1.60 r32) and updated the driver with the win2k driver from that set. Worked fine, I got a message about the driver not matching the hardware, but hit OK. I got a small increase in HDTACH with them however.

r32?! Do you mean release (build) 32? I just checked the promise site now and latest drivers I saw were 1.60 build 19... which is the driver set that won't install on W2K unless I specify the NT4 version.

I am this driver from this part of the Promise site Win2k drivers You need to to use the let me pick a specific driver when updating, when you point the driver update wizard to that driver Win2k wont reconize it as a updated driver so use the let me choose option and select Promise NT 2000 driver. I am also running my cdrw drive on the second ide channel of the Ultra 66 and have had no problems with it. In Win98 EZCD cant do a on the fly record without a buffer underrun but Nero and CDRwin will do it in Win98. All my burning programs run fine in win2k with the burner on the Ultra 66.

I don't think those are the latest drivers... they're listed as version 1.50, where the drivers I've downloaded (that won't install) are 1.66.

The only other drivers is the 1.60 that is scripted for the Ultra 100 that will work with the Ultra 66 just fine 160 driver download To install them you need to select let me choose driver option and point to the Promise Win2000 folder.Windows will give you a may not be compatible driver blaw blaw blaw, select continue install and reboot. The Ultra will now be listed as a Ultra 100 in the device mananger. These drivers will work fine with the Ultra 66 and you will get a little performance gain.
