Win2k probs................HELP PLEASE !!!!

I finally got this burner to work and swapped the cable on the drive from the 40-pin to 80-pin. Windows 2000 starts up and then BSODs, saying "Unknown Hard Error". I restarted and it says "Windows cannot find the following file or it is corrput: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM". I switched the cables back....same thing. Then I tried to run the repair from the Windows 2000 CD and it says it cannot locate Windows 2000 and could not repair for me. (And stupid me kept putting off making the Emergency Repair Disk.) Anyway, I boot into Windows XP RC2 (dual-boot) and it runs CHKDSK on the Win2k drive automatically. This is taken from part of the log it made in the Event Viewer:

Windows will now check the disk.
The USA check value, 0x69, at block 0x3 is incorrect.
The expected value is 0x267.
The multi-sector header signature in file 0x3c is incorrect.

Deleting corrupt file record segment 60.

So it did that for a while, then I saw correcting this file, repairing that file, recovering this file. I saw alot of my files fly across the screen, which was not too comforting. After it finishes I restart and try to go into Win2k. Same thing. I go into WinXP and start to back up my files, only to realize that everything is on the drive except for "My Documents", which has absolutely nothing in the folder. All of my programs are there, all of the items on my desktop are there, but my "My Documents" folder has been completely wiped out. It has a creation date of today, 4 mins after it ran checkdisk.

WTF is going on??? I'm going to reinstall Windows 2000 after i get my documents back if i can (or just use Windows XP for the time being) but everything in My Docuemnts is gone!! It hasn't been deleted b/c the exact same amount of hard drive space is left as before, so it's somewhere on the drive. But where?

I only have 3 words for you, backup, backup, backup. This is always stressed, yet no one ever listens. If you have something you DO NOT want to lose invest in another hard disk or a cd-burner and use them. I learned my lesson the hard way, just like most people do. For me, reformatting is a breeze and takes a few hours at best...

try searching for your docs on the hdd....I had a similar issue when I upgraded from NT4 to XP...it moved the my documents folder to a different place on the hdd.

no dice. found nothing. A friend at work thinks that a sector was corrupt...as a result everything that was in that folder, including subfolders, is gone.
