Win2k prob; why does DOS windows close automatically when finished?

when i run a small windowed DOS program, after it is done the window closes by it self. i need the window to stay up, cause there is info on the window that i need to copy down, but the window just closes. can i change this?? this is bugging me, please help!

first, open up the command prompt, then navigate with DOS commands(cd for change directory and dir/w for display directory) to the file you want to run and type in it's name (blahblahblah.exe) and it will run and stay open for ya.

If you go to Start/ Run it will close right away
If you go to start/ programs/ accessories/ Command Prompt and run it from there it should stay open. If not then I would say something ain't right.
