Can anyone shed some light on how painful this is going to be? I've downgraded computers to a Intel Pentium 233 MMX with 48 MB of RAM running Win2K Pro.

I'd try to cram that, but I don't think the motherboard I have supports anything larger than a 32MB SIMM of EDO RAM.

It'll probably be ok as long as they aren't trying to run anything more than a browser or word-processor.

It depends on the apps you're running of course. If you search hard enough, there are tips to "lighten up" Windows 2000 by disabling services you don't need. I think you can get the core O/S needs at startup down to 30-40MB (from memory, please don't flame). So that leaves you some wiggle room. I've got Win2K Pro on a box with 128MB, and it does pretty well, but it's far from my main rig.

In contrast, I had Win2K Server installed on a box with 128MB for a (long) while, as 128 was the highest the mobo would go and I didn't want to suffer the pain of swapping mobos (which turned out to be pretty simple). It was veeeery painful, as the VM usage on startup was about 150MB.

A number of our boxes at work (800 or 866 MHz) run Win2K with 128 MB. Additionally, I've also ran dual 133 and dual PPro 200 boxes with just 128 MB. The problems I've noted are when users have many apps (ex: 2 browser windoze plus 3-4 documents) open. The boxes slow way down.

It runs adequate with a heavy load. At work, we run Netbackup Datacenter Monitor, browsers, ftp servers and etc. inside 128MB consistantly.
