Win2k Pro Install on AMD platforms

Hello,

I'm having the worst time trying to install Win2k Pro on an Asus A7M266 board. I keep getting a variety of errors such as kernel dump, hardware compatibility warning (with blue screen which won't let OS load), read fails on the CD (tried both the CD-ROM and the CDRW drive - but I'm pretty sure that CD is ok - subsequently copied all files to my hard disk with drag-drop without problem). If I do get the OS installed it either reboots at the desktop or after I click on a program or my computer. Have installed this OS about 6-7 times, mostly with new NTFS format but also tried a few repairs - nothing works!

I have tried:

different PSU
three different vid cards (ATI 9600 pro, ATI 8500, Nvidia TI500
three different processors (xp, athlon, duron)
put in new IDE cables for the cd drives and hard drives
a second, known good, IDE drive
different, known good, RAM

Did I miss anything?

I know there is a Win2k hcl but I'm not readily finding it at microsoft.com

Is AMD supported in Win2K Pro? Anyone here running Win2k pro on an AMD platform?

If so, any ideas? Is it the AMD760/761 chipset of the A7M266?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Win2k definitly runs on AMD processors. Have put it on both Athlons and Durons. Not sure about the answer to the problem though. My first thoughts would be ram or psu, but you've already tried replacments for them. Are you sure all of the drives are jumpered properly? Some things to look for in the bios: AGP fastwrites = off, Assign irq for AGP = on, L1 & L2 caches = enabled, ram timing = by SPD, pci bus = 33mz (depends on the mb whether this is a setting, lock, or fraction of fsb speed), auto detect ide drives, virus protection = off.

Someone in another forum said I have to install the VIA and AMD 760 chipset drivers during the win2k install or the install will never be stable. That would explain the variety of symptoms I am seeing, which range from hardware compatibility warnings to spontaneous reboots after a seemingly successful install.

Does anyone know how I can install the VIA and AMD chipset drivers during the win2k install? I press F6 and then...

Guess I have some more homework to do.

Thank you for your responses and support.

No idea why you are having that hard time..... It had never been a problem for me. As others suggested, it should be a hardware problem.

Does the board have, or have you flashed the board to, the latest bios? That would be my first step, using fail-safe bios settings is next, then barebones install including only 1 stick of ram tried in each slot. BTW I have 2kpro w/sp4 on a AMD K62-550 system I put together from old Presarios clients asked me to trash for them after delivering their new systems, and it's fine.

definitely is.
the platform itself has nothing to do with it.
