Win2k Pro/cstrike/dod question

I'm fairly new to Win 2k professional but I have an issue with the Half Life Server Client that started with win2k. Whenever I update the server list I get the message "cannot get a list of servers". When I attempt to join a game by Ip it says "cannot join game". I am 100% sure my verson is updated, I reinstalled the game out of desperation. I am behind a linux firewall, though I tried joining with the firewall DOWN and it still gave me this message. Any ideas would be appreciated.
