Win2k "phantom" NIC

NIC: 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX)
OS: Win2k sp2

I recently pulled the NIC out of my computer, and after I put it back in, it was detected plug and play and all that. However, after both its names, it has #2.

After putting in the correct settings, I get a message saying that the IP I have entered is already in use with the original NIC, not #2. It says that I may have problems, which in fact I am. It says that the device is hidden becuase it is no longer phsically there.

All I see in device manager is 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX) #2

My question is: how do I get rid of the old NIC settings, or just how do I totally reset all the network adapters?

Control Panel
Add/Remove Hardware
Uninstall/Unplug a device
Unistall a device
Click the box for Show hidden devices
Remove the network adapters

fixed it

it turns out that the ghost nic isnt displayed in the device manager, even when showing hidden devices, but it can be seen when going through add/remove hardware
