I have Vortex2 cards in my 2 systems and 1 is runnin a recent Win2k install. No sound right now, and the drivers situation/install sucks.

Wondering if I should get new sound cards?

Cant go wrong with the Sound Blaster Live! series of cards. I am running Sound Blaster Live! Value in one of my machines, and Sound Blaster Live! MP3+ on my other Win2k machine, installs are flawless...

Running a SB Live Value on my Asus CUBX with Win 2000 and no problems at all. I had to change PCI slots around a bit to get all my hardware working but it was worth it.

I used to have a MX3000 but the w2k drivers just sucked in my opion so I just bit the bullet and went and got a sound blaster live.

I run the original SB Live! and Liveware! 3.0 installs and works flawlessly. I am on the lookout for Liveware! 4.0 :p

SoundBlaster AWE 64 Value. Works great, no problems at all. The Win2000 is actually better than the Win9x one, with the Win2000 it's possible to play several sounds at once, ie. play a game and listen to MP3s at the same time.

I like to hear the words "installs are flawless"

I keep hearing that A3D has better positional sound than EAX. How many are actually playing with 3D sound enabled? I know I'm not.

I just want stability and good sound.

I use an SBLive! Value, it works fine in 98SE/2000/Linux

A3D is better positional than EAX, but EAX isn't even suppose to be for positional audio. It's for environmental effects, I think these are cool, some people think they suck, but either way EAX isn't positional, SBLives just use DirectSound3D for positioning.

With Aureal dead and poor vortex2 Win2k drivers, and no future enhancements to A3D likely, the Vortex2 is a bad choice for a sound card. I hate to say it because they are sweet, and A3D is pretty nice...but with no future support it's kind of useless :(

Just a sidenote creative owns A3D now, so if there is any future support it will come from creative in their sound cards (probably something new, not the live) but certainly not for the Vortex2.

I have a Turtle Beach Montego II which is a Vortex 2 card. I am using the beta drivers that come with Windows 2000 so I have sound, and I am able to play most games with no problem. But, every once and awhile the sound will cut out and I have to reboot to get the sound back. I'm thinking of just going out and getting a SBLive just so I can have a final set of drivers that fully support Windows 2000

Live! value, works great with the built-in drivers. Just remember to put it in PCI2.

I have a turtle beach montego II Quadzilla - I installed the beta drivers and they messed up my system and I had to reinstall win2k. So I just stayed with the default Aureal WDM drivers that Microsoft installs automatically. They work fine, although I kinda lost the advantage of having that sound card. Doh.

I'm using a Terratec DMX X-Fire and I have only one problem: with acceleration enabled (use dxdiag for that) all games are fine but sound in mpges, quicktimes ... are bad. For good sound I have to disable hardware acceleration with dxdiag ...

a friend with a SBlive value has the same problem.

Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer (the old one, not the new 5.1) in my Win2k Pro machine. Flawless installation and it works great.

SB Live! Platinum 5.1. Runs fine on my system, BUT I did not install all that junk that comes with the Install CD. It's a waste of space and it caused my friend's computer (nearly identical setup) to blue screen every 2 minutes.

Are any of you guys enabling the 3D sound in games with the Live? Hows the perfomance hit and sound?
