Win2k or WinXP?

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, and let me first say it looks like an excellent resource.

Sometime in the next week or so, I'll be building a new PC with an AMD Athlon 64 (I might even spring for the dual-core). I already own a copy of Windows 2000, which I've been happy with for years now. All of my software and hardware runs smoothly on Win2K on my current system (Athlon XP 1600, Asus A7N266, 768MB RAM), and I haven't had a problem with viruses or trojan horses for the past 2+ years.

My question is this: With an A64 chip, can I expect the same reliability and performance out of Win2k? Or should I upgrade to XP?

As for Win XP x64, I'd rather avoid that for the time being, as I've read about too many problems associated with that OS. I'd rather wait a little while until there is more support for drivers and such (I can't afford any downtime on my machine, as I use it for my photography business). Also, I've heard that 32-bit applications run slower on XP x64 due to the emulation Windows has to do. Is this true?

In any case, I'd prefer to continue with Win2k, unless there is good reason to upgrade to XP. I'd rather save that money until XP x64 becomes more of a worthwhile investment.

Any thoughts?
 
Save that money. Sticking w/ Win2k is not a bad idea. And, I haven't experienced any slowdown in running 32-bit applications in XP x64. The applications actually appear to run snappier.

I still run Win2k sp4 on my #2 box. It's still a great, functional OS that can do virtually anything WinXP can. I definitely wouldn't bother with WinXP x64. In fact, if I could sell my x64 license back, I'd do it.
 
As someone who's using AMD X2 and Win2K, I can tell you its just as reliable, and I've not had any issues.

Avoid x64 for the time being, its too much hassle with lack of driver support from hardware vendors.

IMHO, stick with what you have and maybe look to upgrading to Vista x64 next year.

FWIW, I did do a couple of searches, and spent the better part of an hour weeding through the results with nothing but irrelevant results. I'm sure this topic's been discussed many times before, but with search terms like "win2k XP Athlon 64" I get a lot of hits all over the board. Perhaps there are a better set of search terms I didn't try...

I bought AMD 64bit cpu last month and I had no problem with win2k sp4...very stable now I have installed win xp pro sp2 recently and ran one minor problem so I don't know if I should go back to win2k pro again.
Too much work and time lost re-install win2k over again for past 2 months.

This forum's search is ass. The quick search is particularly terrible.
