What would you guys recommend for a slower laptop that has a Pentium 3 900Mhz CPU, with 256MB of RAM and a 20Gb Hard Drive? I was thinking about XP, but then a friend of mine told me to run 2k because I may get better performane and better loading times on opening applications. What do you guys think I should do?

Actually I think XP would be better IF you turn off all the eye candy stuff.

256mb is pretty tight with winxp. I'd load win2k with that memory. The fact it's a p3 does not influence the decision at all.

I have many PC's running at my work in P3 700-900 range on XP with 256 ram and they can run it well enough. Win 2K is also a solid choice. Either will work fine, but me personally I have always liked 2K. I have a P3 running it at home and haven't needed a reboot in 10 months.

XP. But if I were you, I'd up the RAM to atleast 384, if not 512, which you can do for like 20 bucks.

Go for a memory upgrade (if possible), and slap WinXP on it. Be sure to turn off the visual effects and unneeded services, and keep background apps to a minimum.

I would go with XP. I run XP with the default settings on several of our work computers that only have 128mb of memory.

Windows 2000, not because of hardware limitations (XP would be fine with that system as well) but because in my experience a more stable OS. However, if you like XP more and are just worried about lag, then by all means use XP.

Sounds like a split audience. I will be upgrading it to 512Mb of memory later on, just need some money. I think I am going to go with XP. I know how to strip the OS, and I use nLite to strip XP on all my machines. I'm a gamer, so I am very tenacious about running background services and apps that run in the tray :p. But I may stick with 2k to try it out, and see how the system responds to each OS.

Thanks for the help guys!

I just setup a cheap system for my cousin - P3 600mhz and 256mb running windows xp just fine. Installed only a few apps like nero, windows media player classic and foobar. All I had to do was swap out the video card and replaced it with a geforce mx so he could play dvds with no lag.

I've run Win2k on several P3 900s at 256 or less, and they perform quite well.

XP will run fine on a P3 900 w/ 256 ram. I just installed XP on a P3 600 w/ 128 megs of ram and it ran fairly well.

I can get a education CD from a tech college for $5 of XP Pro. The machine I am getting has a Win2k Product Key and I have a Win2k CD with me right now, so I can use both of the OS's leagally. This way I can test both OS's. And I have a version of Remote Exploit's Auditor Linux ready so I can go wardriving muahaha.... but you didn't hear that from me :p

Win2K takes ages to boot on slower machines. Look at my rig, I have Win2003 and it boots up 2 minutes quicker than Win2K I used to have.

Once booted up, Win2K should be more stable than XP.
