The parts are in the mail. Which OS is better for this system? Please let me know if you know of any problems with either OS and any of these parts:

AthlonXP 1700+
Soyo Dragon+

-onboard lan, onboard sound
- i plan to use the 4 raid channels in a non raid setup for 4 channels, 2 ibm gxp hd's, a dvd drive
and the 8x philips burner
256MB Crucial PC2100
Gainward Geforce 3 TI 500/550
2x4mb Matrox Milleniums
2x Dell 1503fp 15" LCD displays
1x Dell 1702fp 17" LCD display
30gb IBM 75GXP primary
60gb IBM 60GXP data storage

I'm concerned about the dragon+ not being able to use the 4 ide channels in a non raid setup, as well as the onboard sound and lan. I'm also worried about the Gf3 ti500 have issues with winxp or win2k, since I saw a friend's gainward 550 poop itself with winxp

Windows 2000 or Windows XP shouldn't make too much of a difference.

For that type of system, I would have preferred more RAM, although 256MB should be sufficient (you haven't said anything about what you are using this system for).

I'm far more worried about your choice of hard drive. IBM 75GXPs and 60GXPs (to a lesser extent) have been suffering from extreme failure rates. Please read the FAQ: What's up with the IBM 75GXP/60GXP problems? How do I get an RMA?

i've been using the 75gxp for 1.5 years now, and the 60gxp for six months, problem free. On my previous 800mhz slot A tbird system, i was using win2k and found 256mb to be more than enough. I don't generally go above 175mb of ram. With prices high, i figured i'd just buy one stick, and maybe get another one if they go down.

There is no reason IMO not to go with XP. It has all of 2K + more features, compatibility and possibly even stability.
