WIN2K or WINME

What is the difference?
I am confused. Can anyone tell me what are the benefits and disadvantages of each?
I know WIN2K costs more the WINME. 😕

Imagine NT4 and Win98, except that NT4 can run allmost any game.

Win2000 is based on the NT kernel but WinMe is based on the Win9x kernel

Go with Win98SE if you are a gamer or have out of the ordinary hardware like TV Tuners, Digital Camera's etc. Wait for Whistler to go with the NT kernel.

You can always dual boot - just install ME or 98 first (especially if you already have it), then install Win2k (it will let you dual boot). Ideally they should be installed in different partitions, but if you have no idea how to do that don't worry about it.

The nice thing about dual booting is you will be able to reboot into 98/ME if you need to do something you can't in 2000 (use certain hardware or certain games). Eventually you will ween yourself off the 9x kernel 😀

If you don't wanna dual-boot, go 2k!

what isn't the difference? lol

Yeah Win2000 is Windows NT 5.0, and Windows NT is a good OS. Win9x (95s, 98s and ME) is not.

Currently Win9x has slight better compatibility, but with new drivers from 3dfx and nVidia for Win2000 the speed of both is about the same. Win2000 kicks arse. Much more stable, better memory management, more effecient multitasking...you name it, WinNT does it better than Win9x.

If you don't like the price on Win2000 wait for whistler.
Whistler personal is a slight Win2000 Pro upgrade, modified for use on a single processor home system. With a few additions to emulate DOS I believe (for really old stuff).

Windows NT is the way of the future though, Win9x is dying off fast.

There's one additional that I would make that no one else has mentioned: if you have less than 128MB of RAM, don't install Win2k. In fact, I ended up upgrading to 256MB just because I kept running out of memory in Win2k and was swapping a lot, so I'm of the opinion that 128MB isn't even enough. But a lot of my co-workers are running with 128MB and are fine. I guess I just open a lot of apps simultaneously.

Still, Win2k is better. It's vastly more stable, the network support is rock solid, the driver system is better than Win9x (although Whistler's even better). I'm not sure if it's worth the extra money, though, unless you are running a server.

Whistler is expected in 2H 2001.

WinME (9x) is for people who don't know anything about computers.

Win 2000 is for People who have a clue.

😉 hehe

Words of wisdom, LOL! I must not have a clue because I run Win98SE. I must not know anything about computers. I should buy an Imac. Thanks for enlightening me with your knowledgeable words. I think I will upgrade to Win2K tonight and just tell my kids to screw because they can't use Reader Rabbit and Elmo's Playhouse.

hmm pm has a good point.
I only had 128MB of RAM when I was at Win2000 and it was kind of painful.
I have 384MB now and haven't tried it yet (Win2000 driver problem DAMN ATI!!!)

What is Whistler? Is that the next OS for home users or professional/office use? They just came out w/ Win2K, which I haven't migrated to yet. I am just comfortable w/ win98 for the time being with all the gaming i'm doing.
