Win2k on a laptop, irq problem?

I recently formatted my laptop and installed Win2K on it. Everything was running fine until I tried installing my Wireless PCMCIA Ethernet card.

Now I can't even get into Windows... after it gets past the start up screen, a blue screen will appear with some numbers, IRQL Not Less or Equal, and some problem with NTOSKRNL.exe... beginning dump of physical memory...

So I'm guessing this is some IRQ problem? I removed the card and rebooted and it worked fine. Then I tried inserting the card while in Windows, and it immediately went to the blue screen with the same error.

What do you guys think? Definitely an IRQ error? I'm going to go change my laptop from an ACPI pc to a Standard HAL pc to see if that will work.

I get that message occasionally when I have overclocked too high. I don't think it's an IRQ problem in your case. Have you tried to remove the current drivers, and install a different build?

Maybe there is a bios update for you laptop. I know ACPI is pretty much crap for a desktop pc, but you'll some some power features if you take it off you laptop. But check for a bios update first.

Damn, changing it to a Standard PC didn't work, going to change it back to an ACPI PC now since it feels like it is going a lot slower as a Standard PC.

I'll try to uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the card... why oh why did I format my perfectly good Win98SE install for this?

Update:
I didn't change it back to ACPI, but on the BIOS note, I applied the only BIOS update I found on the Toshiba site when I had Win98 on it, I don't think I need to do it again for this Win2k installation right? The BIOS and the OS installs are two different things am I right?

Anyway, there are no drivers for me to install or uninstall. Weird huh? After I took the card out, all the drivers disappear, I guess it's supposed to do that?

Anyway, under the Standard PC, I looked around and unchecked the IRQ stuff. And tried plugging in my card afterwards. Still get the same error. Here's the exact line:

*** STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000029, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x8046571B)
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

*** Address 8046571B base at 80400000, DateStamp 384d9b17 - ntoskrnl.exe

and then something about a stack dump... laptop rebooted before I could catch it...

Going to change it back to ACPI now...

Update2:
Under Add/Remove programs, I found two items for the wireless card, so I uninstalled them. It's also back to ACPI configuration now...
I plugged the card back in and no problems so far...

I think this started because Win2k installed its own drivers for the card, I couldn't get it to work right, so I ran Lucent's installation... what to do what to do...

Thanks for the help guys... I'll try to figure out the rest of this tomorrow.

Yes the bios and os are different, but ACPI is heavily dependent on a compliant bios....

anyway, I don't think you can go back to ACPI after you've switched to standard pc.

If there is a setting in the bios for plug and play, you may want to try turning it off cause win2k will configure everything on it's own.

Well, I looked under the Computer settings, and it shows up as ACPI so I guess it's back to ACPI...

Anyway, I messed around with my network settings and finally got it to work. SWEET AS HELL!!!

Now I'm off to bed =)
