Win2k not recognizing TDK velocd and Liteon DVD

I recently installed a TDK 48x16x48 velocd into a compaq AMD 1GHZ with a liteon 16x DVD-ROM already installed. Both were working for a period of time, then suddenly I checked and neither drive showed up. The device manager, which shows the deadly yellow exclamation point next to both devices, gives this message about both drivers:"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)" Supposedly this means it is not working due to another device not working.

I tried uninstalling the drivers and letting my comp redetect them. I tried switching from cable select to a master/slave jumper config. No luck so far. Any ideas? Both drives are correctly connected, as far as I know, and have power (they open and close just fine).

Maybe you should check the cables from the cd rom connecting to the motherboard. You might have a real bad connection or damaged port. You can also try running windows update through the microsoft site and see if there are any updated drivers or patches.

first off, are you using nero?
As of Nero 5.5.7.2, if you install any version of InCD after you have upgrade to Nero 5.5.7.2 on Windows 2000, you loose the CDROM/DVDROM and Recorder in your Windows Explorer or My Computer. This is triggered by InCD, but it's a bug in Nero 5.5.7.2.

Can be fixed by downloading the updated ASPI Layer From Ahead Software.

if you're not using nero then use this fix:
Open regedit and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Now delete the keys:
LowerFilters and UpperFilters.

Now reboot and your optical drives should function again. :)

My friend, I cannot say how much of a help that was. It would probably have taken me a long, long time to figure that out. I had installed Nero and InCD, which I had suspected was part of the problem, but then I had uninstalled all of it to try and get the drives to work again, so the ASPI patch wouldn't have worked (since I would have needed my cd drive to reinstall nero). But the registry modification worked beautifully.

I appreciate all of your help. My aim is AznDelite6983 if you ever wanna drop me a line....I have an ICQ number too but I don't use it much. Thanx again.
