Win2k Modem install problems

I have a HSP modem, and an ActionTec call waiting modem; neither of which I can get to work until Windows 2000!

I recently reformatted my computer, to dual boot between Windows 98 and 2k. I was previously using 98.

I installed 98, and it detects and installs both modems. I can dial in and use the HSP modem, at 45333 bps. If I try to use the ActionTec, it says that the remote computer is not answering. I was able to use the ActionTec modem at another location, but can't get it work here for some reason. Anyway, I can use the internet from 98, but not 2k.

When I try to install the modems under 2k, it detects them, installs the drivers, and reboots. I then go to device manager, and it says that it cannot load the drivers. It also says to try and reinstall the drivers. I have done so, several times. I have been trying to install the modems by removing both of them from the computer, and then just keeping one in the tower. I can't figure it out! I've tried downloading new drivers from the correct websites, and the same thing happens.

I noted that Windows was trying to install both of the modems on IRQ 11, with 2 VIA USB Universal Host Controllers, a Trident Video Accelerator, and a Creative SB Live sound card. I know that Windows likes to throw a lot at one IRQ, but could this be it?

Thanks a ton!!!

I don't think the IRQ is the problem. Maybe updating your BIOS help: my sister's PC had some COM ports problems until she had the BIOS updated.

I'm running the latest version of the BIOS. It's a Tyan motherboard. Can't remember the model number off the top of my head.

Try this...

Start, settings, control panel, phone and modem options, modems tab. Highlight the modem, then click on properties. Click on the diagnostics tab, then query modem. This will send a string of commands to the modem along with responses. Post what you get here.

The problem is most likely the drivers, especially if both are working fine under Win98. Did you check the HCL on the Win2K page to see if 2K certified drivers are available? Also check with the manufacturer to see if they have updated win2k drivers. Win2K is much more finicky about hardware than 98, but once you get it to work it's fantastic.

I checked the HCL, and they are both listed on it, as compatible with Windows 2000. Under the modem "profile", it says to contact the manufacturer for the correct drivers. I have downloaded the most recent drivers for them. I believe that there was a Win2k driver for the ActionTec one, and I downloaded it, but there was only 98 and NT drivers for the HSP one, and I tried both of those. Nothing worked. Any ideas?

Thanks!

The HSP Micro modem can be a problem when installed on both Win98 Win2K when the driver install doesn?t install the special com port this modem requires. I've gotten the modem to work when you manually install the pctports.inf file, point the system to this file when choosing "Ports, COM and LPT" in the add hardware wizard. The port will refuse to install in systems where the addition would cause a resource conflict. Since the modem is voice capable, you may need to manually install the wave device which is the pctwave.inf file. A few systems I've dealt with refused to install the modem port regardless of what you did so be warned.
