Win2k lost my CD-ROM, please help

I just recently installed Win2k Pro on a new ATA100 HD. The ATA100 HD is plugged into the primary ATA connector on my ASUS A7V MB and the secondary IDE connector is attached to my CD-ROM (secondary master) and an internal ZIP drive (secondary slave). As of last week everything was working great. I installed Half-Life off of a CD about a week ago. However, last night, I went to install something else and discovered that both my CD-ROM and ZIP drive no longer appear under Win2k. The bios recognize that they are there and I can use a Win98 boot disk to gain control of my CD-ROM in DOS mode, so I know it is still working but it doesn't show up in windows explorer or device manager under Win2k. I did find reference to both the CD-ROM and ZIP drive under Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management:Storage but both had red X's over them with no explaination as to why. I deleted both hoping that they would reinstall after a reboot but no luck. I have tried letting Win2k search for new hardware and several reboots without success. Does anyone have any ideas what has happened here, or even better how to fix it?

I had the exact smae prob with my creative CD-ROM, I saw it wasn't on the compatible hardware list on MS site so just gave up an went back to Win ME.
 
That is so wrong. Both damn drives worked perfectly last week. In fact this is the third time in the last year and a half I have installed Win2k and I have never had this problem. The only difference now is that I now have that ATA100 HD instead of the UDMA33 drive I used the other times, but still it just doesn't make sense that it would just quit working. There has to be some way to fix this problem?

BTW, I've been doing some further reading. Do you have Adaptec Easy-CD Creator 5 installed as well?

My creative CD-Rom occasionally disappears on Win2k. I just go to Add/Remove Hardware, click on Add/Troubleshoot a device, then cancel out of the dialog. It always appears after doing that.
 
If only it was so easy for me. I've been through the add/remove hardware wizard 3 seperate times with no luck. This sucks big time.
 
You have EZ CD Creator 5? Sorry. Try SP2 and pray that helps. Doubt it will though from what I have been hearing.
 
Your doubts are well founded. It doesen't work. I had allready installed SP2. The more I read the more I think that Easy-CD 5 is a prime candidate for the problem. The real bummer is that all the posts I have read about it say that just removing the software doesn't fix the problem either, it takes a full reinstall of Win2k. No bueno. I just got it fully set up too.
 
Thats it, I am buying Ghost tonight. I can't chance losing my work at home.

BTW, from what I hear EZ-CD Creator 5 even has problems with windows 98 platforms. Read an article somewhere.
 
I don't know if it will do NTFS or not. I was planning to burn to CD. All I need is one solid Win 2k Install and I will be set. I know version 5.5 won't write to NTFS but I don't know about Ghost 2001. Anybody?
 
A little interesting info for anyone who cares about this issue.
I reinstalled Win2k (format and clean install) and of course my CD-ROM and ZIP drive showed up. The first thing I did after installing the OS was to download and install the latest offical VIA 4in1 drivers (v4.28). Low and behold after restarting my CD-ROM and ZIP drives were gone again. I ran the install again and this time choose to uninstall the drivers instead and after reboot my drives were back again. Looks like it was never Easy-CD Creator 5 afterall. It appears that it was the offical VIA drivers for my MB. A little scary.
 
I'm having the same problem(my post). Could it be the VIA bus master drivers?? I think I might try uninstalling SP2, reinstalling 4-in-1 without the IDEA bus master drivers, and reinstall SP2...

if your using SP2 might be worth you considering ditching the 4in1's as they dont appear to offer any benenfits over a lone SP2 install from what ive read in other threads.
 
Norton Ghost 6.5/2001 will work w/Win2k-NTFS, I have already used it twice. Just keep plenty of CDRs on hand if you don't have a 2nd HD.

If you have a VIA 686B southbridge chipset on your mobo, do NOT install Win2k SP 2. Install VIA 4-in-1 ver4.31 drivers, mainly the IDE for Win2k driver. ATA100 drives + VIA686B + SBlive causes problems.

Are any of you using SBLives or VIA chipsets?
