I just built a new system with an Athlon 1.4 on an Epox 8K7A+ mobo. Everything is fine unless I try to connect my JVC 2X CD-R drive. When the drive is connected, the bios seems to detect it fine, but when booting to Windows 2000, the drive is repeatedly accessed and the OS never boots. The progress bar gets about half way, the CD-R drive light goes on and off and on and off and it hangs there continuously accessing the CD-R. I've tried it as a master to both the first and second IDE channels with the same results. If I connect my DVD drive to either connector, everything is fine. I've tried swapping cables to make sure that is not the issue and have put the CD-R into an older machine to make sure it is still fully functional, and it is. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Setup:
Epox 8K7a+
AMD Athlon 1.4 retail @ default speed and voltage
Gainward GF3
2x Seagate 40 gig HD (on the raid controller)
Panasonic DVD
JVC CD-R 2X
SB Live 5.1
Random no name NIC
USR Hardware PCI 56K Modem
Win 2K Pro
Things I have tried
1) Swapping the IDE cable out
2) Moving the CD-R from IDE 1 to IDE 0
3) Moving the jumper from Master to Cable Select
4) Disconnecting the DVD so the CD-R is the only CD Drive
5) Put the CD-R in an old machine to assure it is not bad
6) Threaten it with an 8lb sledgehammer ;-)
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate them.
