hey everyone...

i just installed win2k on a friends dell system. the first time we installed it it started up once with no problems. we go to reboot and it blue screens on the loading screen. so i try to do a repair and it cant detect the os. so i try to reinstall. i get as far as loading the necesary files and it revboots like it said it would. then it loads win2k just as if it never was damaged in the first place. i guess it didnt need to completly reinstall. anyways..this was yesterday and just now he calls me up and says that on the boot up screen he gets a stop error saying that the registry is corrupted and it reboots automatically. im confused. not sure what t think about it. maybe you guys can help...the specs are...

Cumine PIII 600
128mb ram
440bx mobo
nvidia tnt2 m64
soundblaster 512v
pci nic
winmodem
6xdvd
8x4x32cdrw sony i think
20 gig maxtor ata66 with pci promise card(could this be the issue?)
motorola cable modem

i think thats everything...

update your BIOS and promise drivers.

my BIOS or my HighPoint drivers were out of date, i updated them, reinstalled (wipe everyting, then format again) win2k, everything worked like a charm.

Does the Bluescreen say something about PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FIALED? Thats waht I got, and its fixed now :)

For one thing he needs to set it so that it doesn't reboot automatically. This way he will be able to read the error.

Also in my case I still cannot boot from ata-66, so try moving it to 33 and see if that helps.

Lastly, w2k is hardware finicky, so if you can't figure out from the error what is wrong then try the pci musical chairs routine.

well...alphaivt hit it right on the head about that first error. it was exactly that but i couldnt remember the error last night! so how do i know which bios to upgrade it too. this is an intel 440bx cipset board, not sure who makes the board or which version the bios is and all that, but the system is a dell dimension xps 600t or t600.where can i find the latest promise drivers? i looked online last night and only found bios and some drivers for ata100 on thier website.

thanx a million

see if you can find the mainboards fcc id number, then search the fcc data base, if some one else could point him to that. . you'll be able to find out more about the mainboard then.
