Win2k installation issues

I have an oddity. If I try to an installation of Win2k from scratch I get an error that says something very generic and unspecific and says I should contact my hardware vendor. When I do an upgrade installation from say Win98, it works fine. My question is WHY!?!?!?! It'd be very handy if when I did a reinstall of my system if I could go straight to Win2k instead of upgrading to it. 😛 So if anyone could help me out at all with this issue, I'd be eternally grateful.

Thanks,

I had something similar happen to me when building a new system for a friend. What happened was I'de get this weird error as the files were being copied "xxxxxx.xxx file is not a valid windows file, please check that the disc is not scratched or whatever, contact your dealer" or something. I could install win98 just fine on his machine and that's what I finally ended up doing after trying 3 different win2k CD's. He had 98 for a while and then that started to get a little messed up too, corrupt system files etc. It turns out that his ram was bad. Just try it, with a different stick of ram, can't be too hard to find, call a friend or whatever and ask them to borrow their ram. Just my .2 cents of course.
