Win2k insists to run my Master HDD in PIO mode, help.

I ran the 80GB that runs DMA mode fine on IDE2, on IDE1, and it boots up in DMA mode. That was with a different install of windows, but it still works fine, and I had the 250GB installed as well, on IDE2, and still PIO mode, on that other install of Win2k.

Wait, I thought you tried the Maxtor on IDE2 and DMA was enabled. Your post on 12-3 @ 10:45am said << DMA seems to be working fine on IDE2 though. >>. So from that point forward I made a couple of posts stating that your Maxtor was working in DMA on IDE2, and nobody mentioned that I was incorrect in my assessment until your post at @ 5:43PM this afternoon. Even then I figured that you would have tried it before you were going to return it to CompUSSR and update the thread. 🙁 I wish someone would have corrected me sooner to save keystrokes.

If the Maxtor will not run DMA on either channel, but another HDD and optical drives are in DMA mode, then the Maxtor is the problem. It's a compatibility issue. Still, you can try flashing the DFI to the latest 6-23 bios to see if it helps. If not return the drive for a WD or a Seagate. 😛

I believe the BIOS for the MOBO is the latest offered by DFI. The BIOS date on bootup matches the latest BIOS date on DFI's site that I can find. So unfortunately I don't think that's an potential fix. Edit - Yes, it's the 6/23 dated BIOS.

Yeah, I meant that DMA in general seems to be working fine on IDE2, with the drives that were currently connected to it at that time, my 80GB WD, and my BenQ DVD burner.

I had like a $250 gift card I needed to spend at CUSA, and this drive was on sale for $59.99 after MIR, so it seemed like a good deal, and I could use the extra storage (though it's not a must, just nice to have the extra room). This has been a huge headache. I think I'll wait till CUSA has a good offer on a SATA drive, I presume those will be a lot easier to setup, I hope anyway =)

Guess I'll be returning this drive. I still have a feeling that the fact that this drive runs @ UDMA Mode 6 might be a problem, since I don't believe Win2k can run drives running in Mode 5, but you'd think Maxtor would have become aware of this problem if that was indeed the case.

I'm sure the Maxtor drive would run in DMA mode on a different board. It's possible that if you upgraded to Win XP that may fix the problem as well. Compatibility issues aren't uncommon. I just wish that I would have realized that you never tried the Maxtor on IDE2. Heck even Maxtor suggested it and you didn't do it until 40 min ago. 😕

The UDMA6 issue w/ external firewire drives that Bozo linked to does not affect internal drives.

OK< more details on my setup. Motherboard ECS 945P-A, Intel chipset, OS=win2k sp4. One IDE controller with master/slave only ! Bios reports deathstar drive(60 gig) at UDMA5 on boot, and NEC3540A at UDMA2 at boot (slave).

So almost nothing in common with his problem, except the OS, and the results are the same, PIO only. My NEC 3540A in windows DOES show UDMA, so bad cable is out, and memtest and drive tests all show normal. Any other ideas ?

just to restate something that was said before - you are going to have to slipstream the SP4 service pak into a CD with win2K BEFORE you install the O/S - not "add it from your HDD". Its too late then.

As a longshot, you may also try loading nvidia IDE drivers at F6 option during install, putting all win2K sata_ide folder files on a floppy (without the folder)

Something is seriously preventing the install of nforce drivers over the MS.
The only thing that comes to mind is WFP (windows file protection) which can be disabled by registry tweaks. (Google)

The only thing left is Win XP pro SP2.

I've re-installed Win2k SP4 with all the web updates on my old 80 Gigger now, and have my older 40 Gigger on IDE2, both running UDMA, as well as my DVD burner on IDE2 running UDMA too. I'm not going to worry about it for now. Just going to return the drive, and probably wait for a good deal at CUSA on a nice SATA drive. I have that gift card, that's why I'm willing to upgrade when I don't reaaaaally need to.

Thanks a million again for all your help.

It gives me the message "invalid file" when I try to download
