Hi all. I just recently bought myself an IBM 75 GXP 30gb HD, installed fresh a copy of win2k, boot up, get everything running, bios detects my IBM as ata 100, and bam, win2k runs it in pio! It makes things run in Win2k horribly! Even with 512mb ram, it takes forever when I click on something. I have heard about a hot fix or something but can not seem to find it, or the directions on how to use it. (frustation can make me blind I guess =) Plz can someone point me in the right direction! Thnx.

Since Win2k does not support ATA 5 yet, You need to download the ATA Ultility Switch from IBM and set your drive to ATA 4 to get it out of PIO mode.

There also is a patch for Win2k that gives it ATA100 support. Just search the forums for ATA100 and it should come up. Also, SP2 will add ATA100 support to Win2k. The patch is just a hotfix that Microsoft released to support ATA100 before SP2 comes out.

I'm a bit confused if i'm running in PIO mode or not for my HDD. I have a 45gig IBM 75gxp connected with the appropriate cables to my ATA100 controller on my A7V which is being controlled by the Promise chip. I have installed the Hotfix as well as the Win2k promise drivers.

Where would i find out if it is indeed running in PIO mode or UDMA5?

Also on my secondary IDE controller I have my Pioneer DVD-105S connected but that doesn't appear to let me select it as DMA...because when i check the Secondary IDE controller properties it comes up as PIO.

How can I get it to change to DMA?
The box above where it says PIO is greyed out so I can't select it at all. I know in Win98se there was a simple tick box to say DMA mode...but I couldn't find anything but autodetect that lets you select DMA mode.

I downloaded SP2 beta and i was wondering if i should give it a try and if it doesn't help can i just reapply sp1 to fix?

any help would be appreciated.

Right click on my computer. Click Manage. Click on Device Manager. Select IDE/ATAPI Controllers. Right click on it and then click on properties. Selet either Primary or Secondary controllers and then click on properties here then too. Click on the advanced tab. Here you will see what windows says your mode is. In the drop down box choose DMA if possible. Do it for both of em, and then back out of this part and do it to your other DMA channel.

Thats it. I don't know if it makes you reboot, but I would do it anyways and then check back there to see if anything changes. LUCK!!!

under my Secondary IDE Channel Properties ->Advanced Settings

It has for Device 0 which I'd say would be my Pioneer DVD 105S drive

Device Type: Auto Detection
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer: PIO

I am using a hacked firmware on my Pioneer..1.22F

I didn't think this would effect anything but perhaps it isn't letting me put my DVD drive in DMA mode?

Also how can I tell if my IBM hdd is in UDMA5 or PIO mode. It is on the Promise controller on my A7V and it detects perfectly in POST.

Thanks

That's what i thought but i don't know how to tell if it is transferring in DMA or PIO mode. Since it is on the Promise controller and not one of the two VIA controllers there is no option to see what mode the disk is in that i can see.

That's what i'm talking about.
