did you already fdisk the master boot record? when you start with the cd, does it give you the option to recover the 2k installation?

you can try booting from the Win2000 CD and when it goes into setup, you will have the option to repair an installation. Choose Repair using the Repair Console. Type in the administrator password (enter) them type in FIXBOOT (enter) it will ask if you really want to do it, type Y (enter) If that does not work, do the same as above over again, but type FIXMBR instead of FIXBOOT. They are both valid commands, and one of them should work.

Just because you installed the Win2k files to the D: drive that does not mean you were booting from that drive. If the drive that was C: was in your machine as the primary drive at the time you installed Win2k it is likely that the Win2k boot files went there.

Microsoft uses a bizarre naming system for WinNT, your system directory is the directory you boot from and your boot directory is where your operating system files sit.

In this case your system directory may be the root of the drive you removed. Check to see if it has the files boot.ini and ntdetect.com WinNT needs these files on your active partition to boot. If you formatted your D: drive with FAT then you can also check to see if they are there. If you used NTFS you will need NTFS DOS to check this drive.

Did you use the C: drive as your primary when you were multi booting between NT and 98? That is the key to your problem. Even if you were multi booting 2 OS'es. NT was the dominant or Primary OS. You C: drive or your Primary partition contains the Boot Partition which in this case would look for NT, even though you had NT running on your D: drive and 98 on your C: drive. You with me so far?

Now, when you boot w/ the 98 boot disk, C: won't be recognized because the Boot partition is NT.

Basically I think your gonna have to put your C: drive back in and boot up again. From there backup what you need to and start over again.

Hope this helps.

I suggest going into 2000 setup again and using the emergency repair option. Choose Fast Repair, and see if it works. If it does not, re run setup again and choose the option to recover a destroyed system or system disk. I have used the FIXBOOT option a couple of times before, and it has worked. I would not have fooled with any FDISK options before I tried the recovery and repair options from the 2000 CD, but that is the advice you received first. Hopefully it could be straightened out.

EDIT: Your files must still be there, otherwise you would not have been able to run FIXBOOT, or FIXMBR. The console would not have recognized an installation of 2000 being there.

I would still suggest to do the Fast Repair option. It should restore anything that is messed up.

It should give you the option to try it without a emergency repair disk. I never had to make one, so I can't help there. I was able to run the Fast Repair option without one before.
