Win2K help...

Trying to see if Win2k is going to do for me what I want it to do at home... I'm installing some software at work to see if some of the stuff that my wife uses at home will work on it before I decide to get Win2K at home. Some of the software is fairly old and checks to see if you are running under Win9X or WinNT. It see's that we are running under WinNT and doesn't care if I have full DirectX support for the software which it is looking for.

How do I go about tricking the software that it is in a Win9X environment to get it to install onto the system and run under Win2K?

Here is what I found from Shadow07 on the Operating Systems forum:

Make sure that the March Compatibility update is installed on your machine. This update adds the COMPATIBILITY MODE option in the .PIF (shortcut). You can then emulate a Windows 95, 98, or NT 4 SP5 OS. The applicaiton will just "see" the OS as whatever you set this option to.

If the application checks for the OS type on install, then you might have a problem. You could just make a shortcut to the install EXE, change the Compatibility mode in the .PIF, and see if that will work. Otherwise, check for an upgrade of the program.

The compatibility program is included in the original Win2K cd-rom...
