WIN2K HANGING ON INSTALL!! UPDATE: Now it's hanging on the splash screen!!#%&%(*@%

I just formatted my harddrive.. now whenever I try installing win2k it hangs on 17% copying the file driver.cab. Says it's not found on the CD so I checked for scratches and none in sight. I gave that up, formatted again, tried installing Win2k Advanced Server and it hangs on the exact same file. Formatted once again! Tried installing Win XP and it doesn't even start installing, it says it's Error 4 or something. any ideas?

oh ya..
epox 8k7a+
amd tbird 1.4
ibm 10gig
2 x 256 crucial ddr
toshiba cd-rom
elsa geforce3

*UPDATE*
Well i eventually got it to work, and after the initial copying of all win2k cd files, it asked me to reboot and from there it hangs on the splash screen (finishes text screen loading), with no progress bar at all... I tried booting into safe mode and it goes in but then win2k setup starts and says "Please wait..." forever. I waited about 20 minutes.. shouldnt take that long really. I really need to finish installing win2k.. i'm almost there, i can feel it! dammit what's wrong with my computer it's never fvcked up this much before!

try formatting the hdd with a startup disk

or sometimes I have found that the cd just needs to be properly cleaned hehe sounds strange but it worked for me

i guess i have no choice but to format.. i've tried making a ms-dos boot disk but it doesn't let me format when i use it.. how else can i do this??

Because once I could not install win2k unless I removed one stick of ram which was bad. ( It worked in win98 fine but it was installed earlier)
and second time I could not install win2k or XP unless I changed the CPU. That particular cpu stopped working entirely shortly after that.

For that back up program use Drive image or ghost, although it will not allow to back up individual files. IIRC, you can restore individual files at least with drive image.

Listen to ZZZZ! I just went through an almost identical situation. Win2K kept saying it was missing a file, so I thought the disk was bad. Then I tried to reinstall Win98 and it just kept hanging and giving me cab.file errors. I finally pulled my 2 older sticks of ram and tried to install win 98 with just the more recent 128 mb stick of Crucial, and wham! Win 98 installed effortlessly. I then tested the two Mushkin Infineon sticks, and sure enough, the newer one reported multiple errors in memtest 86. Mushkin fed ex'd me a replacement stick, which i received within 24 hours of my call and it works fine. After we installed win 98, I went ahead and tried to install win2k, and it also installed effortlessly once the offending stick of ram was removed. If you have more than one stick of ram, try installing the OS with just one. IF it works, you know one of your other sticks is probably the problem. If it doesn't, try a different one, or test all of them with a memory tester utility. (I downloaded mine from Mushkin) Don't be surprised if your problem is a bad stick of ram. My memory had been working fine for well over a year, but that is what my problem was.

I had the same thing happen w/2k pro. Except I let it wait overnight. I'm waiting on--not 1--2 replacement sticks of Corsair memory. I think it may have been the crappy L&C power supply I was using to make my memory die. Guess I should've known better. Now I'm down 55 bucks for an Antec350w. (still waiting on the RAM)

UPDATE! I got the memory back, and it works great again. I've only had one bsod since then, which was my fault (Microsoft would have you believe they're all my fault). I forgot to turn off the Santa Cruz blue speaker and uninstalled the card. oops. good thing I didn't have the full memory dump on. 256mb took a while. I can imagine what a wait 512 is like! Anyway, power supply is pretty important, methinks.
