Win2K - GeForce: My computer has lost the love...

After attempting to upgrade to the Detonator 3 drivers, Win2K has decided it doesn't like hearing about new video drivers and no longer believes in OpenGL.

System: Elsa Erazor X (SDR), Win2K, 550E@733, P3V4X, other stats on request.

The system worked _great_ with the 5.22 GeForce drivers, however something whacky happened when I attempted to go to 6.18. I unzipped the new drivers and did the usual Display:Settings:Advanced...:Search for a valid driver:Install one of the other drivers:

At this point, after having pointed to the directory containing the 6.18 drivers, Win2K appears to ignore them completely and gives me a choice of two inf files (oem7 and oem8) already in my /winnt/inf directory. Well, oem7 turns out to be the inf file for 5.1.3 and oem8 is the original Elsa driver for Win2K. Choosing either of them works, however OpenGL is gone. Winamp doesn't find it, the Win2K OpenGL screensavers don't work, and Quake III complains about not being able to use the OpenGL dll. I checked to make sure the dll is there; it is.

Finally, I can also use the 5.2.2 drivers using the Detonator 2 installer (doubleclick, install shield opens, the drivers install, Win2K reboots and then says it's using 5.2.2). FWIW, those drivers install as the oem9.inf file, which Win2K refuses to offer as an option when I do the Driver:Upgrade stuff mentioned above.

I've tried the gentler methods of fighting with windows: hiding files, re-downloading/installing drivers/Quake/etc., but it ain't workin'.

Suggestions appreciated. Let me know if there is any info that would help.

Before upgrading the drivers, delete all OEM##.inf and OEM##.pnf files referring to Nvidia display drivers. Upgrade drivers using 'Display a list of drivers...' then select have disk and point it to the directory containing the 6.18 driver files.

I have the same asus MB and video card but I had problems with the Detonator 3 drivers, i.e. disappearing sound, Win2K shutdown very long, slow/choppy playback of video CD etc. so I reverted back to 5.22 drivers.

What I would like to know is how to set the AGP4X in Win2K. It's enabled in the BIOS and also added the "EnableVia4X" registry hack but is unsuccessful.
