Win2K File permissions...

I have purchased a Dell workstation a few months ago for work and it has Win2k SP3 preinstalled on it. We added this to our network there (which is only a few other computers running Win98). When we try to add users to access certain files an error pops up saying:

Cannot open User Dialog

(null)

I have everything upgraded to latest pathes and SP4. What can I do to fix this problem so I can get file sharing to work properly. I know its not a problem with the network itself...if I login as the owner of the files on one of the Win98 PCs, I can access them no problem.

Thanks for any help.

If you're running in a workgroup rather than a domain, you must have user accounts for each user on your network that needs to access items on your 2K laptop. That is a user account on the 2K station. 98 stations are simply wide open and you should be able to browse willy nilly.

If you are going the opposite direction (2k to 98), you may want to ensure that the workgroup name matches on both stations. Even though they might be on the same subnet and have correct IP's, 98 is flaky in that it likes machines to be on the same workgroup.

The whole workgroup thing is not the problem (and I want file sharing from 2K ro 98). I added the users I needed to the 2K Workstation. Now heres where the problem is... I login as the owner of the files needed to be shared, go into the permissions box, click on the "Add User" (i believe it is) and I get that error message. I cannot add users to access the files!!! I am at a loss here...I'm never at a loss :Q lol.
