win2k drove me crazy!!!!!!!!!!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, guys, I've been crazy recently coz the weird behavior of Win2K. The problems are as follows(pls see my system specs at the end):
1. I have a 20.5G Maxtor 7200rpm HD, but win2k only recognized 19G something.
2. if there'r CDs in my cd-rom and cd-rw drives, win2k needs very long time to boot up. (if i take out the CDs, it'll boot up much quicker).
actually the above problems are trivial. The more crazy things are:
3. the system is very easy to get dead. everything on the screen is frozen. even if i only run windows explore or a simple application, the system will be dead frequently. some mosaics or strips will appear in the screen. then mouse and keyborad are dead.
4. i already installed win2k for almost 10 times in the past 3 days. it used to be work well for a day, no crash. but the next morning when i turn on the system, win2k can't boot up. a blue screen showed up, said" /winnt/system32/SOFTWARE is corrupt or ..., it's not writable". then the machine continued to boot up and then blue screen.
5. if i installed the "via pci but master(?)", the system will continues prompt" new hardware found... install via ultra dma... finally win2k installed a oem2.inf but still ask to install the driver for the 2nd time after the system boot up.

why? why?????? why the system is so unstable? hardware problems or software (win2k)??i really need this sys for a lot programming projects. pls help........ Many thx!!!!!!

Athlon 1.2G
Epox 8k7a
Crucial 256M DDR
Voodoo3 2000 AGP
Maxtor 20.5G 7200RPM
Enlight case w/ 350W PS
Samsung 955DF......

HDD drives never format to or report the capacity that the manufactures state.

Leave the CDs out then. Perhaps the drive is having a hard time reading it due to a funny format or data type on the disk?

Try disabling ACPI.
Try removing all hardware apart from the videocard.
BIOS update?

USE THIS!
Try not using NTFS
