If you goto www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/default.asp there is a list of security updates by date as well as SP1 download. Now are these security updates included in SP1? I'm guessing some of the more recent ones are not if ANY are even included. Also do i need to download these security updates if i frequently run the "windows update" function located in my start menu. Are these 2 in the same or seperate downloads even though both are listed as critical (i.e. the windows update functions occasionally downloads critical updates, dont know if their security updates though). Thanks for any help, sorry if ive been long winded.

The new way of doing the service pack only installs the things you need, so my advice would be to do the security updates first since there probably are some that are newer than SP1.

There are many updates newer than SP1.

Not all are "critical" updates. Some are just security updates that are not considered critical by MS.

It takes a few weeks for updates to show up on Windows Update from this page. I subscribe to a number of email services that send out notices when MS releases a new security update. This is how most IT personnel find out about them.

First, see if you already have the patch installed. Go to Add Remove Programs. All the "Hotfixes" are the updates that were not included in SP1. The Hotfix will tell you which SP it will eventually be incorporated as (it says "pre-SP2" or pre-SP3&quot😉. It will also have a number next to it. If you go into the corresponding patch on the download page, you will see the number there at the bottom of the page under the uninstall information. "Hotfixes" are Window's way of tagging changes to the operating system that should remain. If you change the OS without a hotfix, Win2000 will detect it and delete it (unless you have disabled that feature).
