Win2K Desktop Icons Are 256 Colors

My desktop icons have lost the 32 bit color and are appearing in 256 colors.

I have tried rebuilding in TweakUI, deleted shelliconcache, and it is no use. The video driver is up to date, and this is driving me nuts.

Anybody have a clue? I rebooted off the Win2K disk and did the repair procedure, but that didn't help, aldo scanned for viruses, but nothing there, either.

All other icons and colors seem fine, this one is a real problem.

Have you tried manually changing the icons? Change them to something else and see if they still show up in 256 colours. If they now show up in 32 bit, try changing them back to the default ones, and see if they are still in 256 colour.

Silly question, but have you checked the colour depth settings? Often after upgrading your video drivers, they revert back to the lowest settings.

Thanks, Drewpy, but I have tried all that. The icon problem extends to folder icons as well. This happened back in August, after I updated to SP3 (never again!) as well, and I am cussed if I know why. Back then I resolved the problem by a format and reinstall EVERYTHING (except Data on the D:\).

I have gone to Microsoft with the problem, and will have to shell out $$$ to get an answer.

I tried the following so far:

Used TweakUI to rebuild - no joy
Deleted Shelliconcache - no joy
Uninstalled/Reinstalled IE6.0 - no joy
Win2K Repair Panel - no joy.

This one is a real brain teaser.

My son just told me - he got the same problem on his PC (W2K SP3).
I put new WHQL driver (nVIDIA) and problem was gone for a few minutes, until I did rebuild icons - same problem.
Put the latest beta drivers - no luck.

Did some search on MS site - nothing so far.

Anyone can help?

I resolved this problem by lowering the rate I was pushing my chip.

I have a P3/866 and I had pushed it to 1066. When I dropped it to 1001 on my CUSL2-C board, and rebooted, and rebuilt the icons they all came back. I have no idea why this worked, but the problem is gone.

Same problem here. I have a GeForce4 MX440 running on a P3 866 (no overclocking), and after some crazy reboot my icons started appearing all in 256 colors. My dvd player software also started complaining and now doesn't play any movies.

I've tried everything so far:

- Gone thru all the display properties
- Updating nvidia drivers (detonator 40.76)
- Updating my monitor driver
- Removing completely both of the above and reinstalling them
- Updating my Win2k (sp3)
- runninng Tweak UI
- running a variety of registry cleaners and fixers
- running anti-virus, anti-trojans, ad-aware, Norton Disk Doctor and Win Doctor, etc.

I've had this problem before and only fixed it temporarily by removing win2k and installing it again from scratch. But then I had this crazy reboot and my nightmare came back.

Please help me.

Thx in advance.
