win2k: Broken system alerts and strange boot requirements

troubledshooter

I have two problems, one of which is old, one of which is new, both of which have me completely befuddled:

1) When I first turn on my machine it gets 1/3 of the way through the blue bar at the bottom of the WHITE "Windows is Starting Up" screen, and hangs--forever. If, however, I let it hang for about 5 minutes and then hard reboot (button on case) it boots fine. If I have been using the machine for a long time and reboot it boots without incident. Interestingly in warm weather it doesn't take the full 5 minutes, but more like 2-3. For whatever reason I think it actaully needs to warm up...does this sound plausible?

2) Yesterady I installed a handful of windows updates to patch against the SasserB that was attacking my campus local network. In so doing all system sounds now come through the annoying in-case speaker instead of through my typical speakers. Is there some option someplace that sets this so that I can revert back? I tried the sound control panel without success. Winamp/windows media player play fine, it appears to only be alerts...

thanks in advance 🙂
