win2k boot file gone

Hi. i think i asked this question several times, but got no answer. can someone please help me with this?

i have windows xp home on my computer. after i install win 2k as a dual boot setup, some silly things appear to be happening. First and foremost, my boot.ini file has disappeared, the usual "notepad boot.ini" in the Run window no longer brings up a file but brings up a box saying taht this file does not exist, create new one? There are other issues too. But where is the boot file now? the one that I can edit with a text editor? Where could it have gone, ? Note: this is after several installations and uninstallations. I did do a manual search fro it some time ago and got some file and determined it ot be a boot file, but now that seems to be gone. Dont remember the name of that file. Help please.

Look on the root of C:. If you don't see it go to Tools\Folder Options and the View tab (this is all in Windows Explorer). Under the view tab uncheck the Hide protected operating system files. You will receive a Warning prompt. You will now see the boot.ini on the root of C:.

isnt it also in the winnt folder?

wait, if you go to the Run dialog box and type in something like "notepad" it starts up the notepad text editor, right? so the notepad program should be in the winnt folder , right?
