win2k: boot error..

for some reason zonealarm crashed on my computer today and i had to reset the computer using the reset button.. during the boot up process(with the progressive bar and the press f8 message), win2k gave me an error saying "can't load win2000 /winnt/system32/config/system is corrupted or missing ...etc".. i then reboot the computer using the win2000 install cd and get into c drive using the manual recovery command.. i went to the directory /winnt/system32/config, did a 'dir' command and saw the file "system".. i then browsing through the list of files found that there was another file named "system.alt".. its size is exactly the same as the file, "system", so i copy the original "system" file into "system.bak" and overwrite the file, "system" with "system.alt", then reboot.. after the system reboot, i was able to get win2k to load.. my question is, is there anyway to fix the original "system" file? and what does "system" file do? is "system.alt" a backup copy of the "system" file?
