What files do i need to put on a win2k bootdisk that will boot to a prompt?

You can create a boot floppy from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Backup.

Chances are that you'll need a boot disk from Win95/98/ME with some drivers that allow you to access NTFS volumes (if you have any). SysInternals may be a good spot for those.

Remember, Win2K does NOT run on top of DOS, so a lot of DOS familiarity may not do you as much good as you think. In fact, Win2K (and NT4) only *emulate* DOS with a command interpreter (i.e., it changes DOS commands into things that NT can understand and perform).

I guess i should be more specific. Only options in Backup are: ERD(emergency repair disk), Restore Wizard, & backup wizard? None of which would work in my situation. I'm trying to flash my bios on a Abit BH6 moboard and I need a floppy to boot as it says in the instructions. Guess I could make one from a win98 system but both pcs i have are running win2k. Sorry I didn't explain myself better.

i had the same problem, just use a windows 9x startup disk or whatever, it doesn't matter it doesn't support the NT format, copy the bios to another disk and boot fromthe start up and swap disk and update away

Windows 2000 doesn't have boot disk which is similar to Windows 98/98SE/ME simply because files needed to start Windows 2000 will not fit on a single floppy disk. Windows 2000 CD bootable, so you can always use it to boot up your computer without need for floppy

stanFL was refering to the ERD, which, of course, is not bootable and is not what you were looking for.

booting from the cd will start installation, also not what you were looking for.

the only boot floppy you can make for NT uses most of the files on the hard disk, and just boots you to NT. also not what you were looking for.

you need to make a DOS boot floppy using a 98/95/ME machine, and use that to flash your bios. i suggest once you make one, use something like winimage to take an image of the floppy for future use.

Booting from CD doesn't start installation. If gives a choice of either Installing or Repairing Windows 2000. Once again , Windows 2000 doesn't have MS-DOS, so ticks making that disk in Win9x won't work. Even if you get to C:\>_ prompt somehonw, you can't start Win2000 from there.

On the other hand, if darksith just needs to do fdisk or format, than any floppy which gets to C:\> prompt will work.
