Ok, this is just wrong. I can say, faults and all that Win2k pro is the most stable OS I've ever used. Why CANT it be supported adequately? Oh yeah:

"...although used by only a few residents, was primarily responsible for hundreds of major problems on UCSB's residential network during the 2001-2 academic year. Residents' computers were compromised with several well-known vulnerabilities and used for all manner of unfriendly purposes such as the installation of viruses like Code Red and Nimda on other residents' computers, denial of service attacks, and port scanning. "

Does this mean that some the moron minorty screws it up for the majority?

I guess if I were a student there I'd be SOL. I run Win2k Pro because of my dual processors. WinXP Home does not support dual processors while WinXP Corp does but is twice as much as the Home edition and waaaaaay out of my price range.

You can pick up XP Pro licenses for ~$40, look in Hot Deals.

Banning Win2K for security vulnerabilities, then recommending WinXP is kinda like saying:
"HEY kids, don't smoke crack. Smoke HEROIN instead!"

BTW: Whoever's behind that policy was obviously smoking one or both of the aforementioned narcotics.

maybe UCSB doesn't know this but XP Home doesn't work on networks larger than 5 PCs or with a Domain controller.

XP Home honestly is a waste of money for anyone running it in a large network enviroment.

WHAT? TCP packets is TCP packets. How is XP ever going to know? Maybe Network Neighborhood won't work the way you would expect it to.

Which is also why I'm wondering how they are going to enforce this!

From the site:
We recommend that users of Windows 2000/NT switch to Windows XP Home.
Hmmm, since Win 2K/NT CANNOT upgrade to XP Home, they want people to format their HDD's? BS! Personally, I'd transfer.

I just thought of this, isn't there some sort of registry setting you can change that will alter the way Windows reports its version on a network? Would it really be that hard to make a Win 2K system report itself as being a Win 9x system?

I hereby call upon the ATOT effect ... :D

If we all emailed the morons (go back to the ResNet home page and click "contact resnet" in the lower left) with the list of reasons why banning 2K is stupid, I think that might prompt a rebuttal.

ATOT is a powerful effect .. with great power comes great responsibility, and with great responsibility comes ... uh ... more power? Yeah, that's it. Power.

Ladies and gentlemen - start your flamethrowers.

Edit - oh yeah ... *covers nuts* repost :D

Say, if they want to ban Windows NT versions 4 & 5, shouldn't someone tell them that XP IS Windows NT? (ver.5.1)

It's because the fewls that ran it either didn'y disable IIS, or didn't patch their servers as they should have..

Tsk Tsk Tsk...

DAMMIT! I want to GO to UCSB, and that just really freaking sucks. Windows 2000 is my favorite OS, since it;s actually stable, and I have it running *perfectly*.

That is complete BS. I like the idea of MercenaryForHire, since if I end up going there (which I hope to, since they have a good CS program) then that would be beneficial to me :D (and that is utter crap what they're doing)

BAH!

XP and 2000 are almost identical. They are a bunch of morons trying to cover up for their inability to run a reliable network. They could start by offering virus download links, links to windows service packs, and hiring somebody who knows how to block a port

Install OpenBSD on a library machine, and use it to attack every single university staff computer with every XP Home bug known. Make sure they cannot get online for more than .005 seconds at a time.

Or do even cuter: Remove their virusscanners and install every computer virus known to mankind. (And those known to geekkind.)
