Win2k and XP PCs don't see each other on network

I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find the answer so please help. I'm at a UNI so we have networks and I'm running Win2k with NetBeui installed. However I can't see the XP computers on the network since they are on XP. I know that they are there since I can see them on my friend's XP. Is there anyway to network with XP without making everyone install NetBeui protocol? Thanks.

Just install TCP/IP and make sure they are all within your subnet. Ie... 10.1.1.x 255.255.255.0

WINS resolution will be done over IP so you don't have to run NETBEUI.

See if you can ping the other workstations after you set them up. You shouldn't have to reboot either.

Ping -a <ipaddress> will give you the machine name and IP address when your ready to test.

Check the workgroup name also to ensure they are the same. (Workgroup is a good choice. ;) )

I will try that thanks Lanman. BTW all the computers are on their own networks and even after I joined an XP workgroup like MSHOME I still don't see them. I just click entire network and see the 2k machines and one XP machine with NetBEUI scattered throughout.

After fiddling with different workgroups and the protocols I'm ready to say "SUCK IT XP" once again... BTW I can ping XP boxes and even tracert them (1hop) but I just can't see them or search for them... Back to NetBeui I go and I'll get it for my roommate too so he can print to my printer. Thanks anyways!

Are you sure you are on the same IP network? IP will still use broadcast to locate resources. when you do a traceroute to the other machine are there any hops between you two?

Here's a quick list of what to check..

Same IP network (meaning usually the first three octets of the IP address are the same with a 255.255.255.0 mask)
Same workgroup name
"netbios over IP enabled"
Usernames created locally on each computer
Netbios/TCP Broadcast node
Something shared on each computer with appropriate access rights.
One computer up and logged in for at least 30 minutes.

If that's all setup then post results of "net config server" and "net config workstation" of each machine.

If all else fails then just install netbeui - its faster and easier and more secure.

-edit- Actually if you are not on the same IP network then netbeui won't work either. If you are on different IP networks (floors of a building, etc) then you'll need to do some other configuration to get microsoft networking going.

-edit 2- well double DUH! I didn't even read that this is your roommate. still, make sure they are on the same IP subnet and all the other info above. Also keep one machine up for at least 30 minutes. My guess is if your on a campus network you have no idea where the subnet master browser is and he could be booting his machine left and right.
