win2k and win98 slow network

My roomie has a 1.2 athlon w/ netgear nic running in win2k. I have a 600 duron w/ dlink nic running in win98.

Does anyone know why it takes a long time for him to access my files? For example, my computer shows up in his "network places" relatively quickly, but the folders take a while to open. Any ideas?
