Win2k and purple screen?

Was wondering if someone could give me a hand with this problem I have.

I have been trying to make the switch over to Windows 2000 Pro. I often get a purple (?) screen on bootup or upon changes to desktop (screen res). This purple screen looks like a desktop background. My cursor is still present (and moves) but nothing else appears. No icons, no toolbar.. no login prompt.. nada. To get around this, I have to reset.. and F8 and select last system config profile.

I am not sure what is causing it. It appears to have something to do with my video card. This purple screen appears to manifest itself when I change resolutions or even just booting up.

I have tried everything I can think of. Tried a whole bunch of different refernece drivers from nVidia, clocked my cpu and vid to default, tried SP1 and even reinstalling Windows 2000. Nothing seems to work.

So if anyone can suggest something.. anything.. I would be greatful. Odd problem I know.. I know I have never heard of it till it happened to me. =P

Thanx

I am 99.9% sure that it is your monitor doing that. I remember that some monitors used to pop up a little box with a resoultion change everytime it happened.. Try a different monitor, or look in the monitor's menu to see if you can turn it off.

Yeah, try a different monitor if possible. I would say to check the BIOS but if it corrects on reboot I wouldn't think that was it. HMMMM. Well, go here and tell us what ya find. Right click on my computer and select manage. Select Event Viewer and expand that. Check out system to view any OS information that might be there. There might be some completely unrelated stuff there though. Don't flip if you get red circles with x's in em. I have some right now and my system is rock solid. Just see if its related to video or anything else. Next hop out of there and look at the Applications section up above System. See whats in there. It maybe a piece of video software that has a problem. Let us know.

Do one last thing too: Go to C:\WINNT and look for setuperr.log and open with notepad if it asks you. This is the error log created during installation. Should be completely empty.

LUCK, and let us know how it goes!

Thanx for the ideas. I'll look into checking the event view and logs.. I am not sure this problem will be caught by it.

The purple "almost" looks normal.. It looks like a simple background color that is covering up the forground (icons etc). The cursor is still present and the arror changes when I am over the corners of a window (resize explorer Window). Point is all I CAN see is the cursor so I am basically blind (can reboot blind luckily).

It happens sometimes upon bootup.. resolution changes.. exiting games etc.. It happens A LOT. *grr*

From the sounds of it, I doubt it is the monitor.. But for the heck of it I'll give it a shot. Personally I keep thinking it has something to do with my video card, but I have tried all that I can and at this point, I am out of ideas..

Any other ideas? plz..

Thanx for the help thus far.
