Win2k and overclocking a K6-3 450Mhz

I have tried several times to overclock my computer and win98 would never boot, even with just a couple mhz up. I recently reformated and installed win2k. I tried to overclock again and win2k destroyed itself with a "Stop" then some memory address. I had to reinstall. Linux worked just fine overclocked. Why can't I overclock my system at all?
My computer:
Asus P5A K6-3 450Mhz
17GB HD
6x/24x DVD
2x2x6 CDRW
Sound Blaster 128
no name NIC
no name modem
some other crap that doesn't matter

Any ideas?

not the greatest oc chip out there, but you should still be able to get some extra mhz out of it. i've had three k6-2 chips none would overclock without a lot of voltage

It has been awhile, but I think it has a normal voltage of 2.2v i tried up to 2.5v but was scared to go any higher. What voltage can it take without being damaged?

Better don't mess with overclocking that chip. The performance gain isn't really worth of killing it :)

Hmm,

Well, there were 2 flavors of the K6-3 450, a 2.4v and a 2.2v version, the 2.2 version I have seen UPTO 500Mhz (with liquid cooling) the 2.4v, forget it, you're stuck at 450Mhz, the reason being, the K6-3 450's cache speed is maxed out, and can't handle much more speed, so it locks up, maybe can damage the chip. My advice, Don't overclock it at all..buy a K6-3+ 550 (mobile chip). I have a K6-3 450 (2.4v), So I am stuck there as well...not for long, I am buying a T-bird 1Ghz ;)

Thanks Shamrock, I just thought my computer was defective or something. I'm not allowing myself a new computer for another year :frown: (unless I find a REALLY hot deal :D) Enjoy your T-bird.

You could also do what I recently did with my system...buy a K6-3+ 450Mhz CPU for around $50-$60 from any number of vendors (I got mine for $53 from TigerDirect) and overclock it to 550 or 600Mhz. I have mine running VERY happily at 600Mhz and it has effectively nearly DOUBLED the speed of my computer which used to be running a K6-2 500@550Mhz... :)
