win2k and loooooooooooooooong shut down

I've read some forums that say that there are hotfixes that create the problem, i've also read some other forums of there being a new hotfix that is only available if you call MS, i've also heard of people advising to terminate windows services...

Is there anything that i can do to make my shut down faster? i have win2k, it takes very very extremely long to shut down...any help would be welcome. (btw, i've installed all the windows updates and this is a very fresh install of win2k). I'm running a p4 3.0ghz with HT, 1 gig of RAM running at 3200, a 250 gb serial hdd, and the usual optical devices.

Hmm. When you say that it takes a long time to shut down, does it wait for nearly two whole minutes, at the "saving user settings" screen? And then the "shutting down windows" dialog appears for like ten seconds or less? If so, then you are having a problem with user-mode services running, and keeping open handles to the user registry hive. As for solutions, that symptom can have a number of different root causes, but the general issue is that it's a programming error, but the problem becomes magnified by a poor design decision by MS (by throwing many user-mode services into a single process). The usual workaround is to try to identify which particular service is causing the problem, and simply outright disable it. Oftentimes this may be caused by an installed 3rd-party piece of software too, and/or corruption of the user registry hive file as well. So it's hard to say exactly.

Have you defragmented in a while? I use XP pro, but it seemed to shut down a lot quicker after I defragmented. I don't know if its supposed to, I may have been seeing things...

Do you have your system set up so that the page file is being wiped on shut-down? That is one cause of very lengthy shutdowns.

That's why I was asking about the duration of each shutdown dialog, because if you have that set, it occurs after the "Shutting down Windows" dialog appears, I believe, just before the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" full-screen display shows up. I'm doubting that is the case.

Also, there have been issues and interactions with various recent 5.xx Zone Alarm versions, that can seemingly interfere with proper shutdown, W2K just hangs at an all-white screen during shutdown, and nothing happens, and reset/power-off is the only solution at that point. I know someone that has a problem like that, and it seems to go away if they completely un-install ZA.

Start > Run > gpedit.msc and go down the console to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon. Set "Maximum retries to unload and update user profile" to something low like 10 seconds. Close the Group Policy window and shut down a couple times, see if that addresses the problem.

dang it, that's not even in my list of options

thanks for all the help guys...i'll see if it helps!

If it's not in your list of options then see if you have SP4 installed or not (Start > Run > winver).
