Win2K and Internet connection

Installed Win2K last night (over WinMe) and cannot get connected to the internet.
I am on a network (peer to peer) with the server sharing cable modem using sygate. I can see other computers on the network and gateway TCP/IP etc is properly set up. What I do not see is where you specify the name of the DNS Host??
ANyone??

Under Properties for your LAN connection, select TCP/IP, hit Properties, then click Advanced. The second tab over is DNS.

Tried that and it has the main server as 192.168.0.1 as gateway. What is this metric thingy - says 1 right now. Do you type the name of the server in the middle where it says Append DNS suffix OR at the bottom -->DNS suffix for this connection plus check the box for "register...". This is weird still cannot connect/understand this. Where can I get a proper explanation for all this??

Try entering 192.168.0.1 as the DNS server too. found that I couldn't resolve any addresses without that setting.

Here is what I have so far
RPC service = Windows locator
TCP/IP = 192.168.0.5 subnet as 255.255.255.0 and default gateway as 192.168.0.1
Preferred DNS server = 192.168.0.1
IP settings = 192.168.0.1 and subnet as 255.255.255.0
Default gateway = 192.168.0.1 Metric = 1
DNS server = 192.168.0.1
Anything else??
Thanks for your input

when you say IP=192.168.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 - do you mean the server? your nic shouldn't be x.x.0.1, only the comp that's doing the NAT is. your IP doesn't matter so much - use anything in 192.168.0.x as long as it's not being used by another machine. make sure the cable modem nic is set to share internet connection.

Sorry I meant the IP is 192.168.0.5 and subnet is 255.255.255.0. The server that is sharing the cable modem is using Win98 SE and Sygate and that is set to 192.168.0.1 & 255.255.255.0 (first NIC) with the cable modem using dynamic IP on second NIC.

This is retarded... I have spent over 2 hours on this damn thing so far and still no success. I can see everyone on the NW and can access files. However I have to supply a PW to access from another computer even though I have full sharing permitted to maximum users.
ANS STILL CANNOT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET???
I need help from a knowledgeable Win2000 user. Isn't there someone or someplace I can go to for step by step instructions on setting up an internet connection using TCP/IP through a WIN98SE computer acting as a server.

Try pinging the gateway, then the gateway at the ISP for your dialup.
If you get to gateway on your lan (w98pc) but not the ISP gateway, you arent getting through the w98pc.
Hmmm, cant you setup sygate as a DHCP server? If so you should od that and let w2k autoconfigure from sygate DHCP server.

Install Win2K fresh, dont upgrade, then dont use sygate just use windos built in ICS. It is pretty simple to use and hard to screw up.

3 more suggestions to check
Tinysoftware - cannot pay for SW when testing has to work first
DHCP - where is that option in WIN2K
ICS - WIN2K is not the server (a Win98SE machine is the server using sygate).

The saga continues
I enabled DHCP and I was able to access the internet and downloaded SP1. After SP1 was installed I switched on all my computers on the NW and tried the internet on my Win2K machine and NO UNABLE to CONNECT WTF is going on!!
And with DHCP I cannot see any computers on the NW anymore. Switched to a static IP no more internet HEEEEELLLLLLLPPPP!!! I hate Micro$hit WINBLOZZE!!! WIn 2K, Winme Win98 are all the same crap.

I can connect with DHCP finally but I have lost my SOHO NW connections - can't see any computers on the NW even though I can go thru my server to the internet on the NW. MS is out to get me I can feel it.
