Win2k and Highpoint Drivers

Under device manager in Windows 2000 I have two entires, one is the Highpoint controller and the other is a Highpoint PCM or RCM device (Dont remember exactly this morning),which isn,t loading correctly as it has that yellow problem sign over it. WHenever I go to click on thee later of the two to try and Update or delete it, my system freezes and I have to Hard Boot.

Can somebody tell me if there is supposed to be two entries here? I had updated the drivers with the latest ones from Highpoints site and installed the latest via drivers and after that point I had nothing but trouble, mind you it was real late and I may have done something wrong!

well there should be an enrty for each possible channel, I have the high point on my win2k, and only have that first entry listed, that pcm thingy, i thinks you got a problem,. if you can find out what those pcm things are supposed to be for.

when you install the highpoint driver you will get a rcm thingy there also, as i have the same issue. a possible way around your problem is to maybe boot into safe mode and try to remove the device there. then reboot in normal mode and reinstall the driver that best suits your bios. for instance if your using the bios that shipped with your MOBO then use the drivers that shipped also. if youre using the WZ or WW bios, use the latest win2k hpt370 drivers from thier website. i know that if i try and use the latest drivers with the UL bios, i get a blue screen and cant boot win2k. but if i boot into safe mode and change drivers all is well. also be weary of bios in win2k. i know that the WW or beta WZ bioses drasticaly reduce disk performance in win2k while th eUL really improves it. and im not the only one who has noticed this as it is a bug listed in many sites that distribute the different bioses ie(apus hardware) so i stuck with bios UL for maximum disk speed.

good luck and pm me if you need any more help!

I am wondering if the PCM thing is because I have another drive attached to the raid controller which is not running on the Raid. I have a 5 gig Quantum Fireball running just for Document storage and backup. My Raid is two 15 gig Maxtors ATA-100 running in Raid 0 on the Primaries of IDE3 and 4. So maybe the highpoint controller is for the Raid and the PCM thing is for the other drive?

Thanks for the info on the bios, you know I researched a lot before starting this project and never saw this!! Are there any downfalls to going back to this bios version you are talkin about? What did you do about the via drivers? did you update those?

Thanks a bunch

the only downfall i saw was that i lost the extra "features" that the newer bios offered. i guess some memory timing issues and such, but it really wasnt a big deal to me. i dont oc my memory at all. i only noticed increased disk performance when i went back to UL. i did however get the newest hpt370 drivers to work with the older bios. what i did was...i updated the bios to beta WZ and installed all drivers for hpt370. rebooted. i then shutdown and restarted and returned back to the bios UL without ever changing the hpt370 drivers. i guess left the registry alone along with alowwing me to use theolder bios. i really cant say exactly ho this worked but it did. i then installed via 4n1's ver 4.28(beta) but left out the ide bus master as windows was reading my ide burner as a scsi once the ide busmaster was installed and thus my burner wouldnt work with nero or any burning apps..so i left that out...and now im running very smooth and fast. getting ~17000 on sandra, if that matters, and thats for an older maxtor diamond max plus 40 15 gig udma 66 HDD.

Interesting.... Did you install with ACPI or as a standard pc? I am going to go to work on this tonight somemore, I assume I can get the UL bios from the Abit site?

One quick question, do you have both entries under your device manger, that I spoke of above? or just the pcm thing?
