Win2K and file sharing

Hi Y'all,

I'm having trouble sharing files from one of my PCs. I have file and print sharing enabled on a three comp system. I can access any files from my computer running win2K, but my other systems(98SE) can't access any files from the win2K comp. It asks for a password to access the comp from a win98 machine. I have no passwords installed on the drives and none of my logon passwords works. Also, when I transfer files from the win2k comp to others, the files are locked? to adjustment from the win98 machine. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
D

This is just one way of doing it.

Ok Go Start > Settings > Control Panel > Users and Passwords.

Go go to the Advanced tab > then click Advanced.

Open the "Users" folder and create a new user with the password and user name that your Win98SE PC users. Eg when you start up and the PC and it asks for the password for Bob, Bob is the user name etc.

Give the user Admin rights or whatever.

Done and done. Rince and repeat 🙂

the reason is, is because you have your guest account disabled. go to control panel, admin tools, computer management and then users. enable the guest account. When you want to share something make sure you under permissions you give "network" access to the share.

OF course enabling the guest account is not reccommended alla security reasons but you can do it if you not worried about that

BAH! don't you dare enable that crappy hole of a guest account.

on the 98 machine's network control panel, add the "client for microsoft networks" and make it your primary login for 98.

then, when u log in to 98, use the username and password you use on your win2k box. these are the credentials it will supply to win2k (or any other box u connect to) when you connect to a share, and you are sure they are valid since they are what you use to log in to that box every day

done and done (and still secure [relatively]) 😛

Yup... I just had this same exact problem.

Don't enable the guest account. Just create new accounts so you can log on. Worked great for me. 🙂

I can't remember who helped me with this, but I pretty much know the exact problem you're having.

Create an account for your computer.. DO NOT LEAVE THE PW BLANK. If you have a blank password, good luck. THe 98 computer can, but make up something for the 2000 account. After that, share away.
