Har har funny... no seriously. I've been using win2k pro for a while now (and I got enough ram btw).. but like.. I got a Debian box running as a gateway, router, ftp, web, mail and all that good stuff.. I'm just wondering if there is anything win2k server would be better at? .. I guess I didn't really communicate that in the original thread though.. Well, just other things too.. I don't know what MMC is, but I'm scared to try it, cause you're all a bunch of jokers...
format c: my ass! :)
Well, anyways.. someone let me know what MMC is please.. and any more suggestions would be good. What's WINS amd what's netbios do?

MMC = Microsoft Management Console. Its really a great tool and one that you really need to get to know. You can manage and get performance stats on any windows 2000 box as long as you have admin rights. It basically is a system management console that lets you use tools in plugin form to manage and view many different things at once. Like I said, its nice.

From what I understand WINS is basically a form of DNS, but not many people use it now. Use DNS, its pretty universal. Oh, BTW, DNS = Domain Name Service. It helps you turn www.anandtech.com into some other IP address that the rest of your computers can get web pages from (basically).

Microsoft is trying to faze out the nightmare that is WINS with windows 2000, but it cant quite do it. Thats because it is still needed in a heterogenous network of NT4 and Win2k machines. If you have a Win2k network only, with AD, then you can (and should) use just DNS.

Its kind of a shame though, since the version of WINS that comes with win2k server is the best yet. A vast improvement over NT4
