Win2K Advanced Server setup w/ Promise ATA100 @RAID 0 on an ASUS A7V133

How's that for a title, eh? 😀

OooooK...here's the situation, I've been asked to put together a server for our small office. The boss-man wants to go with a 1Ghz T-bird on an ASUS A7V133 w/2 WD 40GB 7200rpm drives running @ RAID 0 off the motherboard.

The hardware has been purchased, so changes in hardware are not options at this point, either.

Now, I know from goofing around with Win2K Pro on my home system (which has an ASUS A7V in it), that I was unable to figure out what files Win2K wanted for the Promise controller, and I ended up installing the OS and then the drivers were installed after the fact.

I need to know what specific files Win2K AS is going to need from me upon boot. Knowing that, then I can create the proper floppy to insert when it asks me for the drivers. Failing that, does anyone know if I can configure the RAID controller before install, run the Win2K install, and then install the Promise ATA/100 drivers after the install is complete??? It seems like that would work fine, but I'd rather ask and sound stupid than try something stupid and totally FUBAR my NTFS file structure or something...

I would stick with installing the OS while connected to the ATA66 controller, then install the Promise drivers and move the drive to the 100 controller. Once you've done that, Install the second drive and run disk management to set up the RAID. To the best of my knowledge, you cannot configure the raid during setup.

Hmmm...

Reading through the mobo manual, they suggest that creating the RAID array destroys all data, and configuring that should be the first step before installing an OS. Then, once the array is defined, go ahead and install the OS.

My question really lies in whether or not it's safe to install the Promise ATA/100 drivers after the OS has been loaded, even though the RAID array will have defined already. Will this have an adverse effect on the file system or the RAID config?

I apologize for any questions that may sound stupid, but this is my first RAID array...

The advice is appreciated...

ok hers is what you want. I spent the whole day one this one.

The only via promise drv that work for raid -0 are the ones on the cd only.
explore cd go into raid and copy for your os
You wil want the ones tha say some thing like---- light and fast controller.
it will not work with any other of promises drivers.

copy drivers to floppy
set jumper on board and bios for raid
You should hook up both drives with thier own cable each on ata channels then
set up raid

boot to cd
when win promts for raid drivers press f6
install drivers
restart
format and partition and install windows

2 40 gig drives will be striped into one large 80 gig 🙂 and about 60-80 percent faster
hope this helps

btw you will only see light and fast when it is installing it from the floppy if you don't see something like this they are the wrong ones
